Concerning RICG I, 194 A and its metric form
Abstract
This paper focuses on the philological analysis of RICG I, 194 A, a late-dating Christian funerary inscription from Augusta Treverorum (Trier, Germany). Due to its state of conservation, very deteriorated and fragmentary, the reading of the text presents numerous problems. This critical edition offers new proposals which, in all cases, contribute to solving these difficulties. After this, we focus on the textual exegesis, which provides the epigraphic and literary parallels on which our edition is based, that, in some cases, modify the traditionally accepted interpretation of certain passages. Our study will ultimately allow us to answer a double question: on the one hand, we will demonstrate that at least one section of the text is unquestionably metric, something that had not been proven until now; on the other hand, that there are sufficient reasons to relate the epigraph to the remaining cases of inhumatio ad sanctos preserved from Trier. Finally, and thanks to the comparative study of the pieces in which the practice is attested in this city, we address the possibility of the existence of an archetype that would be characterized, among other elements, by the use of metric sequences or complete verses, the vocabulary and the stylistic resources of the carmina epigraphica.
