Abstract
This study aims to achieve an understanding how media culture of pupils and teachers meet in Austrian (Viennese) primary schools. This investigation is part of a project at the University of Vienna which examines media ecudation and media literacy in primary schools, trying to support their development in classrooms. The thesis is that media culture is (1) determined by sociocultural, geographical and historical factors and (2) has an impact on a successful integration of media education in primary schools. So a first aim is to describe and compare the use and access of media in the home of children, their parents and teachers, applying a quantitative questionnaire. At first the context of the study as well as general and theoretical considerations will be presented, following a description of the methodical approach. Finally selected, important results of the study will be discussed. The results show differences concering media culture and literacy practices because of the social class gap.
